    James Kaplan

    CEO, Destination Capital

James is an American trained lawyer and holds an Institute of Directors (“IOD”) certification. He has been involved in hotel transactions in over 50 countries since 1988. Hong Kong was home for 18 years working both as a lawyer and as owner of a hospitality consulting company which he sold in 1998. After the sale James worked in development for Marriott International and Kerzner International before relocating to London in 2004 with Kerzner. He then ran development for Fairmont Raffles in EMEA and Asia Pacific between 2007 and 2014 before returning to Asia based in Bangkok to oversee development for Minor Hotels until 2020 when he co-founded Destination Capital which is a private equity fund which acquires hotels and converts them to IFC/ EDGE compliance standards. Destination also engages in ESG initiatives from employment to energy and waste management. In addition to supporting the visual arts and philanthropic education initiatives, James is also an advisor to Diriyah Gate Development Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which is developing an US$18 billion hospitality precinct in Riyadh. James is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley and Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco. It was during his time at Berkeley where he gained a keen appreciation for the environment and learned about ‘integrating the problem into the solution’ when serving as support staff in 1980 to the Berkeley City Council during an evaluation exercise to come up with alternatives to city landfill sites. This experience and understanding the importance of technology as an integral part of the solution, are particularly relevant today.
