The Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Hines, the international real estate firm, can today reveal the eight finalists for its 2021 ULI Hines Student Competition – Europe, which takes place on 21st April 2021.
Now in its second year, and in light of Covid-19, the competition provides a compelling opportunity for the winners to receive fast-track access to Hines’ internship programme as well as a free year’s membership to ULI. The team challenge pits students from a diverse range of universities, business schools and further education establishments across Europe, against one another to test their skills and knowledge about real estate and land-use in a practical case study about the changing shape of office environments. The finalists are:
- Copenhagen Business School, Denmark;
- EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht, Germany;
- IESE Business School, Spain;
- INSEAD, France;
- London Business School, United Kingdom;
- Politecnico di Milano, Italy;
- Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain; and
- University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
On the day of the final, students will work in teams of four on the topical challenge of the future of the workplace, which will assess their understanding of how offices will evolve and remain connected to the communities in which they operate.
The competition provides a unique opportunity for students to gain real life experience working on a project across multidisciplinary functions including design, development, investment and finance, as well as social and environmental issues that impact decisions around land-use and sustainable development. The winning team members will receive:
- a fast-track to the Hines internship programme;
- a guided tour of a live project and participation in project meetings in Hines’ European offices (as travel restrictions allow); and,
- a one-year ULI membership – providing access to research content, events, webinars, education and mentorship programmes, knowledge sharing and connections with a multidisciplinary global network of real estate and land use professionals.
Lars Huber, CEO of Hines Europe, said: “Due to the high-quality number of applications it was a challenge to whittle it down to just eight finalists which is testament to the standard of entries and the range of submissions, from a diverse array of educational establishments, we received this year. The competition provides an incredible opportunity for the finalists to gain exposure to senior real estate leaders and test their knowledge on current real estate issues, with the winners receiving fast-track entry to the Hines internship programme. We are very proud of our long-term commitment to the ULI to connect with, and support, young professionals while broadening out the talent pool to attract innovative and diverse talent into our fantastic industry.”
Lisette van Doorn, CEO of ULI Europe, said: “We are very proud of the collaboration with Hines, one of our key corporate partners, with whom we have jointly developed the ULI Hines Student Competition – Europe. We are delighted to have received more entries this year than before, which have been to a very high standard. It is important to attract and retain the best talent to our industry who can help support us at ULI in our mission of shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. This competition is a perfect example of everything ULI stands for with such a geographically diverse and multi-disciplinary collaboration focused on thought-leadership, learning and sharing best practices. It helps us to support the younger generation as they start their career in real estate and we benefit from the innovative ideas of the future leaders of our industry to collectively solve the challenges ahead.”
