Revitalising Disinvested Urban Areas Through Community-Centred Regeneration 

Opportunity 

Dublin’s North East Inner City (NEIC) faced challenges related to social inclusion, economic disparity, and urban blight. The area required a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the community, stimulate economic development, and improve residents’ quality of life.​ 

Solution 

In October 2019, ULI organised an Advisory Services Workshop in the NEIC. The workshop’s recommendations focused on:​  

• Community Engagement: Actively involving local residents and stakeholders in the planning and decision-making processes to ensure that redevelopment efforts reflect the community’s needs and aspirations.​ 

• Economic Diversification: Encouraging the establishment of diverse businesses and social enterprises to create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth.​ 

• Public Realm Improvements: Enhancing streetscapes, public spaces, and infrastructure to create a safer, more attractive environment that promotes social interaction and community pride.​ 

• Integrated Services: Developing a coordinated approach to service delivery, addressing issues such as education, healthcare, and housing to improve overall quality of life.​ 

Impact 

The workshop’s outcomes provided a roadmap for the NEIC’s regeneration, emphasising inclusive growth and community empowerment. By focusing on local engagement, economic diversification, and public realm enhancements, the area is poised to become a vibrant, sustainable community. These initiatives serve as a model for urban regeneration efforts in similar contexts.
