Dublin’s North East Inner City (NEIC) area has many advantages including a city centre location, existing building stock, a vibrant community and adjacency to the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and other areas that have recently seen a great deal of investment. Nevertheless, it is also a district that has faced many challenges over the years. The sponsor for this panel, Dublin City Council (DCC), has approached ULI to help them develop a sustainable long-term regeneration strategy for the area. Over the years there have been numerous strategies and plans that have attempted to tackle the complex and entrenched challenges faced by the NEIC. DCC are interested in ideas for radical, transformative and innovative solutions.

Summary of Recommendations

Over the five days, panelists toured the city by foot and bus, and interviewed over 80 stakeholders involved in the area. This included a cross section of city officials, business representatives, developers, architects, police, social services and community citizens. In their short time in Dublin, the panelists looked at the long-term economic and social regeneration of the area to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, social exclusion, dependency, crime, low educational attainment and life ambition in Dublin in the NEIC area. International best-practice examples were shared. On Friday 28 June 2019, the panelists presented their final recommendations to Dublin City Council.
