• Exciting new opportunity for graduate students to engage in challenging exercise in responsible land use
• Teams of four from competing universities will join final at London Business School on 24 April 2020
• Winning team will receive one-year ULI membership and fast track to Hines internship programme

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Hines have announced a new competition, the ULI Hines Student Competition – Europe, for graduate real estate students across Europe, expanding on its successful 18-year competition partnership in the Americas.

The new competition will see teams of four students from pan-European universities working on a case study that tests their understanding of real estate finance, investment and development, as well as social and environmental issues, to present a solution for a timely land use challenge. The winning team will receive a one-year ULI membership and fast-track to the Hines internship programme.

Lars Huber, CEO of Hines Europe, launched the competition at the 2020 ULI Europe Conference on Wednesday 5 February and said: “We are very proud of our long-term commitment to ULI and to supporting young professionals in creating better communities. This competition is about driving innovation and encouraging the generation of new ideas to approach land-use problems from different angles and perspectives. 

“Similar to our experience in the Americas, we will be emphasising the values of cooperation and teamwork – necessary talents in the investment, planning, design and development of sustainable communities. The competition will act as a springboard for students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it in a workplace environment.”

Our initial discussions with universities have indicated a great deal of interest to take part and we look forward to receiving the initial entries. Besides the learning experience, this is a great way for students to become acquainted with ULI early on in their careers and start developing their networks.”

The first stage of the competition will see teams submit a pre-qualification questionnaire together with CVs of each team member by 17 February. Submissions will then be reviewed by the jury consisting of a diverse group of senior industry professionals representing different disciplines and geographies, with teams selected for the final stage at the London Business School on 24 April 2020.

The day will culminate in each team presenting their solution to a timely land use challenge to a jury of senior industry professionals followed by an evening drinks reception to announce the winners.
