Urban Land Institute Welcomes New Member Leaders Across Global Regions
More than 60 distinguished real estate industry leaders have joined or been reappointed to the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) governing bodies
Lisbon (11 July 2024) – The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has appointed Margarida Caldeira, Principal at global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, as the next chair of ULI Portugal. Caldeira, who will be the first female chair of ULI Portugal, succeeds Francisco Rocha Antunes, Chief Development Officer at +urbano, and officially began her voluntary two-year term on July 1, 2024.
Margarida Caldeira joined ULI in 2016 during Gilberto Jordan’s leadership and has been part of the ULI Portugal Executive Committee since 2022. She is also a member of the ULI Europe Hotels, Destinations and Resorts Product Council.
Caldeira helped spearhead the international expansion of Broadway Malyan with the launch of the practice’s Lisbon studio in 1996 and its Sao Paulo studio in Brazil in 2010.
She is highly experienced in a range of sectors including masterplanning, architecture, interior design, resorts and residential. Margarida is currently Broadway Malyan’s global lead on hospitality where she has overseen the development of a world-class portfolio of projects for some of the world’s best known hotel operators and investment funds.
Outgoing chair Francisco Rocha Antunes welcomed his successor’s appointment: “Margarida is a senior professional in real estate in Portugal who truly represents the mission and values of ULI. Combining a vast international experience with the deep knowledge of our industry she is the right person to succeed me and I’m very happy that she is the new chair for Portugal. We will continue to work together and support all our members during these exciting and challenging times.”
Margarida Caldeira said: “It is a huge privilege to have been asked to become the new chair at such an exciting time for Portugal, with the economy experiencing a golden moment, tourism breaking all records and investment continuing to flow into the country.”
“My predecessor Francisco has done a wonderful job as chair over the past three years, continuing to grow ULI Portugal’s membership and reinforcing its position at the very heart of the Portuguese property sector, and I will be striving to support both its growth and continued influence in the years ahead.”
“We have now entered a new era for real estate in terms of how we think about the places and spaces that we need for today and into the future and I am looking forward to helping to shape these exciting conversations by continuing to build on the knowledge sharing that underpins the work of ULI.”
“A key challenge facing Portugal today is housing affordability and I hope to build on the positive work already being undertaken by ULI Portugal in its mission to find a solution to this increasingly critical issue.”
“I am also very proud to be the first woman chair of ULI Portugal and I shall continue to be the strongest possible advocate for creating the right environments that allow women to thrive across all sectors of the built environment.”
Lisette van Doorn, CEO, ULI Europe, said, “I would like to thank our outgoing Chair Francisco Rocha Antunes for the significant contribution he has made to the success and growth of ULI Portugal under his leadership, and his ongoing commitment to ULI. He has left a great legacy.”
“I am very pleased that Margarida Caldeira, who is a highly experienced and connected industry leader and very active ULI member, will be at the helm of ULI Portugal for the next two years as it leverages industry opportunities and helps our members and the wider industry navigate important challenges such as climate change and housing affordability. She is extremely well placed to build upon Francisco’s work, to continue to grow our membership in Portugal and deliver a local programme that embeds ULI’s global mission priorities, working closely with the executive committee and wider leadership.”
