[LONDON, 13 MAY 2020] – The Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Hines, the international real estate firm, have announced eight senior pan-European real estate leaders who will be making up the judging panel of the ULI Hines Student Competition – Europe, which has been revamped to go “fully virtual” as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.
The final of the competition, which was due to happen in April, was postponed due to travel restrictions that have been imposed globally and will now be taking place using an online video conferencing platform on 18 June 2020. Working in groups of four, using ‘virtual breakout rooms’, students will be engaged in a challenging exercise in responsible land use, that looks at how city centres are shifting retail toward community-led mixed-use development – an interesting and timely challenge.
Nine finalist teams, from higher education establishments across Europe, will be put through their paces by a competition jury consisting of senior industry professionals, including Brian Moran (chair), Head of Hines Ireland; Lars Huber, CEO of Hines Europe, Lisette van Doorn, CEO of ULI Europe; Sir Stuart Lipton, Partner at Lipton Rogers Developments. LLP; Scott Malkin, Chairman of Value Retail PLC; Hala El Akl, Director of PLP Architecture; Ed Siskind, CEO of Cale Street Partners; and, Sabine Lebesque, City of Amsterdam Development Corporation.
Lars Huber, CEO of Hines Europe, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has had a deep impact and caused major disruption to everyday life, but we are delighted about being able to proceed with the final stage of this unique competition for European real estate students. Cultivating the talent of the next generation of professionals remains incredibly important to ensure that we bring fresh perspectives to finding the solutions to challenges that our industry faces and being positioned to pursue the opportunities that will emerge.”
Lisette van Doorn, CEO of ULI Europe, said: “The Covid-19 crisis has shown a strong desire among members to connect, share experiences and learn from each other. Our members and our senior leadership in particular have contributed significantly to our online programmes. And the commitment of senior industry leaders to give up their time to mentor students is more important than ever, while also learning about their needs and views on what makes cities successful in the future.”
The finalists feature groups of students from the University of Cambridge, Technical University Dublin, London Business School, Polytechnic University of Milan, INSEAD graduate business school and the Technical University of Madrid. The winning team will be announced on the day and will receive a one-year ULI membership as well as a fast-track to the Hines internship programme.
